Two people remain missing in the Tailrace Canal outside Moncks Corner in two separate mishaps Saturday evening.
Around 6 p.m., one person jumped out of a boat and didn’t come back up to the surface, said Robert McCullough of the state Department of Natural Resources’ law enforcement division.
Around 8 p.m., two boats collided near the same part of the canal, and rescue crews airlifted one woman to a hospital and treated another for minor injuries, McCullough said.
A third boater remained missing. Divers entered the water to search for both missing boaters but had not found anything by 10 p.m., he said. The search will resume this morning.
No names of those missing were available late Saturday, and McCullough also did not have the name of the victim who suffered critical injuries Friday night after running under a dock on Hobcaw Point in the Wando River.
McCullough said that boater remained hospitalized Saturday, and that accident also is still under investigation.
The incidents marked a grim beginning to the summer boating season. The Memorial Day holiday weekend traditionally is one of the most challenging for marine law enforcement.
