Moncks Corner woman accused of embezzling $55,000 from Charleston church

A Moncks Corner woman is accused of embezzling $55,000 from the Charleston church where she served as a treasurer.

Stephanie Wright, 51, of Killarney Trail, is charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent concerning the allegations, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said.

Members of Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church, at 104 Line St., told officers that the money likely was taken between January 2012 and the start of this year.

Wright is accused of writing numerous fraudulent checks in that time, many of which were made out to her mother to purchase goods and services, police said.

Valid checks required signatures from two authorized church officials, an incident report said. According to police, Wright forged signatures on some checks and wrote out properly signed checks to unauthorized people.

Church officials provided officers with bank records to corroborate the allegations, the report said.

Wright was arrested Wednesday, court records show.

A judge granted her a personal-recognizance bond in a Charleston County court, records show.
