The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is not until Monday but the seeding speculation show starts early for everyone interested in college baseball.
Projecting Super Regional matchups is always risky; first-round Regional hosts must advance to participate.
But not counting what might happen in conference tournaments this week, this is how to arrive at such juicy Super Regional clashes such as South Carolina at Florida State, Tigers vs. Tigers (Clemson at LSU) and The Battle for Virginia (Virginia Tech at UVa).
Step 1: The updated official NCAA RPI list:
2. North Carolina
4. Oregon State
5. Florida State
7. Cal State Fullerton
9. N.C. State
10. Mississippi State
11. South Carolina
15. Virginia Tech
16. South Alabama
Step 2: Match the numbers, 16 South Alabama at 1 Vanderbilt, 15 Virginia Tech at 2 North Carolina, etc. …
Step 3: Where reasonable, adjust to avoid clashes involving two teams from the same conference.
16 South Alabama at 1 Vanderbilt (Commodores ridiculously balanced)
14 Indiana at 2 North Carolina (baseball, not basketball)
15 Virginia Tech at 3 Virginia (still an All-ACC matchup but the in-state matchup is irresistible)
13 Louisville at 4 Oregon State (former Citadel assistant Dan McDonnell’s Cardinals are a dangerous draw)
12 Clemson at 6 LSU (Chick-fil-A Bowl rematch)
11 South Carolina at 5 Florida State (hopefully Steve Spurrier will weigh in against a rival from his Florida days)
10 Mississippi State at 7 Cal State Fullerton (Bulldogs are national seed worthy)
9 N.C. State at 8 Oregon (might be the most fun Super Regional)
