LYNCHBURG, Va. — Ryan Mattes tossed a six-hit shutout as top-seeded Campbell beat Charleston Southern, 4-0, in the Big South tournament opener on Tuesday.
The Bucs will face host Liberty at noon today at Liberty Stadium. The Buccaneers were swept by Liberty in mid-March.
“(Campbell) showed why their record is what it is,” CSU coach Stuart Lake said. “They took advantage of every opportunity they had and manufactured runs very well.”
Mattes (8-3) struck out four and pitched out of his lone jam in the fourth. CSU put two runners on as John Faircloth and Chase Shelton both singled, but Mattes induced a double play.
CSU first baseman Robbie Street had two hits for the Bucs.
In the first game of the day, Tyler Herb pitched six scoreless innings while Nick Oberg and Josh Powell each had two RBIs to lead second-seeded Coastal Carolina to a 6-1 victory over seventh-seeded Longwood (24-27).
Coastal Carolina (36-19) will play No. 4 seed Radford at 4:30 p.m. today.
In other action, No. 6 seed Gardner-Webb upset No. 3 seed High Point, 8-2, and Radford defeated No. 5 seed Liberty, 6-3.
