A female passenger riding in a southbound vehicle on Interstate 95 “exited the moving vehicle” and was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer in the next lane, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Southbound traffic was rerouted for almost three hours.
At about 6:25 p.m. Brandon Graham, 28, was driving his tractor-trailer south on I-95 in the right lane when David Beaver, 55, went to pass him on the left. A female passenger came out of the 1993 Buick and was fatally struck by Graham’s vehicle.
The state Highway Patrol and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle was traveling in the left lane, southbound, when a female passenger exited the moving vehicle and was struck by a tractor trailer that was in the right lane,” the Highway Patrol said in a statement.
