In efforts to help others, students from the College of Charleston and The Citadel who were leaving campus for the summer donated everything from clothing to furniture to school supplies.
College of Charleston students donated nearly 10,000 pounds of supplies and clothing to Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina, while Citadel cadets donated their items to the school’s Women’s Club garage sale. The garage sale, which takes place today, raises money for scholarships.
“This is the first year we have donated items directly to a charity,” Melantha Ardrey, College of Charleston director of residence life, said in a news release. “We really wanted to promote both sustainability and community involvement in our residence halls, so a partnership with Goodwill just made sense. We are so happy the Charleston community will benefit from the items donated by our students.”
College officials also said that by donating the items instead of throwing them away, the students reduced the amount of items discarded in the local landfill.
Monedia Elzey, president of the Citadel Women’s Club, which is sponsoring the garage sale, said about 75 of the items for sale were donated by cadets. “It’s amazing the stuff they leave behind,” she said.
But it means there are some great bargains for people who come out today to shop. Bicycles range from about $20 to $50, she said. And people can pick up quality luggage for as little as $10. A great deal of Citadel and military clothing also is available for sale.
