May is National Pet Month, which celebrates the special bond between pets and humans. Pets are loyal and affectionate, and even if they do ruin your stuff from time to time — the risk is worth it to have them in your life.

That doesn’t mean we have to splurge on top-shelf food and designer beds while we’re clipping coupons to go grocery shopping.

Your dog’s or cat’s love isn’t going anywhere, but your money certainly is if you’re overspending on pet supplies. Here are some ways to keep those tails wagging even on the slimmest budget:

At Bi-Lo this week, you can get four free dog food and treat items when you buy a bag of Beneful dry dog food for $17.38, yielding about $13 in savings. You can find details of the deal in this week’s Bi-Lo circular.

Target also is offering a special deal on pet items this week. When you buy two of the pet care items listed in this week’s circular, you’ll receive a $5 Target gift card that you can use in the store. One of the items listed is the Chuckit! Ball Launcher, a popular toy for large dogs.

Big Lots has some of the best prices in town on pet basics. The stainless-steel dog bowls by Peerless Pet are $4 each, and they feature rubber grips that keep them from sliding around on the floor. Retractable leashes are $10, collars for all sizes are $2-$5, and doggie bag holders and refill bags are $5 each.

Cat food is particularly cheap at Dollar General this week. Purina Cat, Kitten or Indoor Cat Chow is on sale for $4.50 each, and Whiskas Temptations Cat Treats are two for $3. Plus, you can save $5 with a purchase of at least $25.

At Dealwagger.com, you can find good deals on cat scratching posts, marked down to as low as $11, all-natural treats, collapsible dog crates and decorative accessories like collars and leashes. Use the code “Rescue” at the checkout for 5 percent off.

Crates by Midwest are significantly marked down at Petco this week, with the iCrate, usually $70 to $150, now priced from $22 to $110.

Some pet beds were better priced online. Wal-Mart.com has a large, machine-washable pet bed by Majestic for $26. At wayfair.com, the Economy pet bed by Snoozer is on sale for $33. The cover is topped with a soft sherpa material and is machine-washable.

As for toys, keep in mind that cats and dogs are easy to entertain. A homemade toy can amuse them just as much as a $10 toy. For dogs, it can be a knotted rope from a boating supplies store. Cats go for even cheaper thrills, such as a stick with ribbons and feathers attached to the end of it.
