Tyler Griffin returned to The Citadel lineup for the first time in more than a month and slugged two home runs to lead the Bulldogs to a 21-6 trouncing of Charleston Southern tonight at Buccaneer Field.
Griffin, out since he injured his ankle at South Carolina on April 9, was 3 for 4 and drove in five runs for the Bulldogs, giving him 10 home runs for the season. Bo Thompson added a grand slam for his 13th home run, and also drove in five runs.
Mason Davis, Drew DeKerlegand and Jason Smith also homered as the Bulldogs tied the school record for home runs in a game.
The Bulldogs (31-22) have 58 home runs for the season, with Thompson, Griffin and Joe Jackson (11) in double figures.
Reliever Kevin Connell (1-2) earned the victory, pitching two innings and allowing one run.
Charleston Southern fell to 21-30, giving up seven runs in the first two innings and seven in the fifth. DeKerlegand hit a three-run bomb in the first; in the fifth, Griffin hit a solo and Thompson a grand slam to left center.
In the eighth, Smith hit a three-run homer, the first of his career, and Davis followed with a solo shot.
Robbie Streett drove in three runs for CSU, and starter Levi Mauldin (1-1) took the loss.
The Citadel is at UNC Greensboro to close the regular season this weekend, while CSU hosts Coastal Carolina.
