Academic Magnet’s Peurifoy records 100th career girls soccer goal in playoff win over Andrews
Senior standout Kallie Peurifoy scored the 99th and 100th goals of her career as Academic Magnet blanked Andrews, 11-0, Wednesday evening at Ravenel Stadium in the second round of the SCHSL Class AA playoffs.
With her 48th-minute strike, Peurifoy became the first girls’ soccer player in Raptors history to reach the century mark.
“It’s awesome,” said Peurifoy, a Virginia Tech signee. “Coming in here, it wasn’t like ‘I have to score my 100th career goal.’ It was more like ‘we have to come in and win each game.’ ”
Remarkably, it wasn’t until after Peurifoy scored a hat trick against Beaufort on April 26 that she was informed of her then-98 career tallies.
“She’s been an incredible addition to our team,” Academic Magnet coach Anna Merriman said of Peurifoy. “Her leadership in terms of her on-field presence really makes the level of everybody else kind of step up to her. The last couple days in practice, she’s been a woman on a mission.”
Academic Magnet will host Barnwell on Friday in the third round.
Maddy Carens got the scoring started when she scored from a tight angle five minutes into the game. Marin Miller converted four minutes later before Becca Bosch one-timed a pinpoint cross from Jesse Dooley into the net as the Raptors took a 3-0 lead within a 15 minutes.
The margin was 7-0 at halftime after Peurifoy, Leslie Thelan, Dooley and Miller found the net.
“We’ve been really focused at practice,” said Merriman, whose squad lost to Wando, 3-0, in the regular season finale on May 2. “I knew (we) would come out really wanting to make a statement in the first game of the playoffs.”
Top-seeded Academic Magnet (20-3) took advantage of an own goal and strikes from Peurifoy, Bosch and Rachel DiGiacomo in a second half that was shortened to 25 minutes.
The Raptors did not allow a shot on goal in the contest.
Barnwell, the No. 4 seed, will visit Academic Magnet on Friday in third-round action.
