Charleston Southern 8, Savannah State 3
Charleston Southern’s Chase Shelton went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs to carry the Bucs to an 8-3 win over Savannah State on Tuesday at CSU Ballpark.
The Bucs (19-27) host USC Upstate at CSU Ballpark today at 6 p.m.
Shelton ripped his first home run of the season, a solo shot, in the eighth.
Savannah State (28-21) used eight pitchers — one in each inning — while CSU got a solid outing from starter Levi Mauldin (1-0), who worked four innings.
Relievers Kyle Ward and Joe Pistacchio were both sharp for CSU. Each worked two shutout innings out of the bullpen.
The Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Zach Haralambis off Richard Loftin.
Savannah State would tie the game in the top of the third, but the Bucs answered back with two in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good, behind Shelton’s second hit of the night.
Shelton belted a two-out double off the fence in left center to score Bobby Ison and Jaren Sustar, giving CSU a 3-1 lead.
The Bucs added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. Alex Tomasovich’s two-run single found a hole in center field and Zach Hagaman’s sacrifice fly scored Ison, who reached on a bunt single.
Tomasovich scored again in the eighth, belting his 10th double of the year and scoring on an RBI groundout from Ben Qualkinbush to push the lead to 8-1.
Reliever Stephen Leopard came on to work out of a jam in the ninth to close things out for the Bucs after the Tigers scored two runs late.
Tomasovich and Haralambis were both 2 for 3 for the Buccaneers, while Kevin Hickey was 1 for 2 and drew a walk.
First baseman Peter Poole had two hits and scored a run for the Tigers.
The game started about 10 minutes late because of a late-afternoon shower.
