Charleston police looking for woman who stole 87-year-old’s wallet

Charleston police say this woman stole an 87-year-old woman’s wallet at a West Ashley Piggly Wiggly on April 18.

Somebody stole a woman’s wallet while she was shopping last month and then charged more than $800 on her credit cards.

Charleston police released an image of the suspect from a store surveillance camera Monday and are asking for help finding her.

An 87-year-old woman told police she was shopping at the West Ashley Piggly Wiggly near Charles Towne Landing around 12:30 p.m. April 18 when somebody took her wallet out of her purse, according to an incident report. The store’s surveillance camera showed a woman following the victim around the store before the taking the wallet, according to the report.

The victim told police the wallet contained about $40 in cash and several credit cards. Shortly after the theft, the victim reported that the cards were used to run up more than $800 at the Walmart on Rivers Avenue.

The woman who stole the wallet may have been driving a silver Cadillac Deville with a gray soft top, according to police.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Charleston police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
