Thirty of Charleston County School District employees make more than $100,000; 51 percent of workers make less than $39,999

Thirty employees of the Charleston County School District make more than $100,000 per year, while nearly half of its workers make less than $39,999.

The highest-paid employee is Superintendent Nancy McGinley, who makes $218,392 a year. Her contract expires in December 2016.

School district employees' salaries were requested as part of the newspaper's Salary Spotlight, an online database of salary information for state and local employees.

Bill Lewis is No. 2 on the list at $167,280. He is the district's chief operating officer who oversees its school construction projects. His contract expires in June 2015.

Lewis was followed by attorney John Emerson at $147,900 and chief of finance, operations and human resources Mike Bobby at $143,434. The school board agreed in February to extend both of their contracts until June 2016.

Seven of the highest-paid employees were principals. Five of those principals' salaries were less than $100,000, but they all receive a supplement between $15,000 and $25,000 that pushes them over the six-figure mark.

Top-paid principals were Stall High's Kim Wilson, Wando High's Lucy Beckham and West Ashley High's Mary Runyon.

About 5,300 employees work for the district. Twenty-seven percent earn more than $50,000, and state law requires government agencies to report exact salaries for those employees.

For those who make less than $50,000, salaries can be reported in ranges.
