The Wando girls soccer team picked up a 3-0 victory over Academic Magnet Thursday night in the regular season finale. The Warriors own an impressive 15-1 record but still have some unfinished business.

The school celebrated Senior Night at Wando Stadium, and three of the six seniors — Melissa McCool, Rachel Torlay and Alex Hayes — have been letter winners for four years. They’ve played on teams that have combined for an 83-4 record in that stretch and produced two Class AAAA state championships. The other seniors are Hannah Ross, Grace Gore and Suzi Vallez.

The past is impressive, but what’s on their minds is the future, mainly May 17 when the Class AAAA state championship is contested at Memorial Stadium in Columbia. The Warriors lost to T.L. Hanna in last year’s state match, and the seniors want revenge and another championship ring.

“We definitely have unfinished business,” Wando coach Shannon Champ said. “We’ve played eight games in 10 days and are pretty banged up. I hope we can get ready and regroup for next week’s playoffs. We’re going to have some battles in the Lower State. It’s going to be uphill.

“It’s great to have a nucleus of players who have played in thee state championships. But we have more rookies who haven’t been there. Our seniors’ job is to make the young players know that one bad night, and you’re out of the playoffs.”

Thursday’s match against Academic Magnet team was tense. The two schools played last week, and the Warriors won in penalty kicks. The game was scoreless after the half before the Warriors pulled away in the second half. Junior Megan O’Connor scored on a rebound right in front of the net in the 51st minute and Ross scored on a breakaway four minutes later. O’Connor recoed her second goal in the 73rd minute.

Like Wando, Academic Magnet has been a force the last four years. The Raptors won two back-to-back state titles beginning in 2010, but Christ Church pulled off a 2-0 upset in the championship last May. The Raptors are 18-3 and will be the No. 1 seed when the playoffs begin next week.
