Retired Navy Cmdr. Mike Alverson is The Citadel’s 2013 Employee of the Year.
Alverson, who lives in North Charleston, was selected by his peers at the college.
The other finalists were Leah Schonfeld of human resources and Ned Discola of the physical plant.
Alverson received $1,500, a gift package from Auxiliary Services, free campus parking for one year and 2013 season tickets to Citadel football games with reserved parking.
Alverson came to The Citadel in 2004. Since then, he has been instrumental in raising the national and international profile of the Regimental Band and Pipes.
In 2010, the cadet company was the only U.S. organization to participate in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It was the second trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, for the Regimental Band and Pipes. The first was in 1991.
He also played an integral role in securing entrance to the upcoming Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax this summer.
