After spending 12 years leading Charleston’s Center for Women, Jennet Robinson Alterman is moving on. She announced her resignation as executive director on Wednesday.
Alterman said she is proud of her time at the center but needed to shift her career focus.
“I am planning to start a consulting business to work with nonprofits and other organizations that want to support women’s economic empowerment and leadership,” Alterman said. “My career has revolved around women’s issues, and I see a growing demand and need to move women forward, and that is how I want to spend my future time and talent.”
Her move comes at the heels of changes at the organization. The Center for Women recently had shifted from program-based initiatives to a cause-based organization, but officials with the organization said Alterman’s decision to step down has nothing to do with the changes in the last few months.
“Jennet supports the Center’s direction 100%. Her resignation was a personal choice and we know she’ll continue to support the Center’s efforts in the community,” a press release from the center stated.
Alterman echoed that sentiment, saying she “wholeheartedly” supports the organization’s new direction.
“This is the time to make a transition as the center is on solid footing with great credibility and respect in the community,” she said.
Alterman will remain in her capacity at the organization through May, but the center is now looking for a replacement.
“Jennet is leaving some enormous shoes for us to fill,” said Jane Perdue, president of the board of directors. “She’s done a terrific job in positioning the Center for Women as a great resource in the community.”
During her tenure, Alterman said her greatest accomplishment was the thousands of women and men “who saw the value in women’s engagement and empowerment that showed that we’re on the right track and then some.”
Receiving a grant from Oprah Winfrey in 2006 was also on her list of accomplishments as executive director, she said.
