At the once-bustling Trailwood mobile home park in North Charleston today, Sheila Major and a friend of hers were working with the tools they had on hand to remove a tree that was in the way of relocating her home.
The size of the tree spoke to how long Major has lived there — 28 years — because she planted the tree herself. Her children were little then, too, but are all since grown, graduated from college, and off in the working world.
Major is among the last of the residents who had not moved out of Trailwood by the May 1 deadline they had been given. Dozens of trailers remain at the park, which once was home to more than 400.
“It’s been stressful,” major said. “It’s hard to see friends you’ve known for 20 years leaving.”
Some have struggled with the cost of relocating a mobile home, which can be thousands of dollars.
Plans to sell the 105-acre mobile home park site, not far from Boeing’s aircraft assembly plant and the Tanger Outlets mall, have been known for about a year. The buyers, operating as Palmetto Land and Sea LLC, are considering building a hotel, offices and stores on the property, which is expected to have a direct connection to a planned rebuilding of Michaux Parkway.
Major said she’ll relocate her home to a piece of land she bought on Johns Island.
