The Army Corps of Engineers will provide an update later today about the study it is conducting as part of the proposed Charleston Harbor deepening project.

The public meeting will be held April 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Mark Clark Hall at The Citadel. The presentation begins at 6 p.m.

The Army Corps held its last meeting about the harbor study in December 2011. The federal agency said it will be presenting new information today and that the public will have a chance to comment.

The study is part of the process to dredge the harbor’s shipping channel to 50 feet from 45 feet.

The Port of Charleston has said the $300 million project is critical to its future because shipping lines are increasingly using larger, heavier vessels that require deeper waterways.
