Driver charged with DUI after striking Charleston police cruiser
S.C. Highway Patrol troopers charged a North Charleston man with driving under the influence in connection with a wreck that sent two Charleston police officers to the hospital.
On Tuesday, a pickup truck that was headed west on Interstate 526 drove through a traffic light and collided with a fully marked 2011 Crown Victoria at the Sam Rittenburg Boulevard intersection, Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said.
Paramedics transported Robert Wilbanks, 25, and Klever Wells, 30, to Medical University Hospital, Wyant said. Both officers were wearing a seat belt, she said.
Wilbanks was released Tuesday night, hospital officials said.
The pickup’s driver, 65-year-old Robert Zimmerman, was also hospitalized, Wyant said. The hospital listed him in good condition Wednesday morning.
Zimmerman is charged with driving under the influence, Wyant said.
