A Mount Pleasant company that handles food products and industrial recycling will nearly triple in size over the next year, move its headquarters to North Charleston and take over a former dairy factory on the Charleston peninsula.
Tides Enterprises, an umbrella company for seven businesses, plans to move its headquarters from La Mesa Road off Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant to three buildings at 4275 Piggly Wiggly Drive in North Charleston in phases over the next 12 months.
Over that same time, the company's Tidal Processing division will convert the former Regis Milk Co. plant at 578 Meeting St. into a cold-storage facility for food products shipped in and out of the Port of Charleston. Regis Milk closed in 2011 after 53 years.
The first products could be stored in the 10,000- to 12,000-square-foot former milk plant by late June, said Michael Porcaro, president of Tides Enterprises.
The company also has plans to use the back side of the former milk plant for a recycling operation for cans, cardboard, plastics and other items.
When the moves are complete at both sites, Tides Enterprises and its subsidiaries will grow to about 115,000 square feet from 42,000 square feet now, Porcaro said.
“We are exploring bringing everything in-house instead of going outside for it,” he said.
Also, Tides' subsidiary, Charleston Nut Co., is in the final stage of acquiring Sublime Pies and Cakes on James Island. It will keep the name and produce baked goods with new equipment at its Mount Pleasant site before moving to North Charleston.
The Tides group of businesses employs 30 to 60 people, depending on seasonal demand.
More employees will be needed once the expansion is complete, Porcaro said. They will include additional sales staff and commodities traders as well as 10 or more people for the cold-storage site on Meeting Street.
