Piggly Wiggly shopper Parker Kaufmann has been stopping by The Pig for groceries ever since she moved to South Carolina about 25 years ago.
But today, she wasn’t picking up a few items at Piggly Wiggly in Sea Island Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant. The Mount Pleasant woman left with a check for $20,000.
It was the grand prize in Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co.’s “Local Since Forever Giveaway” — an in-store game that rewarded shoppers for supporting their communities by shopping locally.
As part of her grand prize, Kaufmann also had the opportunity to select a local school that would receive an additional $5,000 donation courtesy of Piggly Wiggly. Kaufmann and her family decided that Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant would be able to best use the award.
“The experience is just too big to wrap my mind around,” Kaufmann said. “I don’t usually do things like giveaways, but I’d bring the game pieces home after shopping at my Piggly Wiggly, and my 13-year-old son would sort through them. He would stick them on the collector card for me. I had a few pieces, and I thought, ‘Oh, I should enter and maybe I’ll win a small prize.’ I never expected that I’d be deciding what to do with $20,000.”
The youngest member of the Kaufmann family, 13-year-old Kirk, attends Moultrie Middle School along with nearly 900 other students. The donation will help his school and classmates.
“We are simply thrilled and so appreciative of this generous gift from the Kaufmann family and Piggly Wiggly,” said Anna Dassing, Moultrie Middle School principal. “We’re exploring ways we could use the funds including a sound system for our gym, an outside basketball court for students or a curtain for our theater stage. The Kaufmanns and Piggly Wiggly have given our students the opportunity to expand their horizons further than they could have before.”
Piggly Wiggly added the $5,000 prize to continue its support of education.
“Quality education for our kids is perhaps the single most important aspect of a thriving community. Piggly Wiggly is glad we can play our part to help support our schools — whether we’re donating food for fundraising cookouts or money raised during our Piggly Wiggly Charity Classic golf tournament,” said David Schools, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. president and CEO. “I know the folks here at Moultrie Middle School face incredible challenges every day to deliver the foundation our kids need. It’s a tough job, and we thank and salute our teachers and are proud to support our local schools.”
Piggly Wiggly hosted the Local Since Forever Giveaway to celebrate shopping locally. Pig shoppers claimed nearly 24,000 prizes and discounts, including free groceries for a year, free gas, local weekend getaways and local food prize packs during the giveaway.
