Utility workers responding to a power outage in Berkeley County this morning found a man who had been electrocuted near some transformers behind a fence.
Zachary Jones, 29, of Salters died of electrocution, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said. Jones was lying in a pit around a transformer inside a Berkeley Electric Co-Op substation in Cainhoy. A fence had been cut to gain entry, Salisbury said. Jones’ body was found about 10:45 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s not clear why Jones was behind the fence. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
Electric substations have been targeted by people trying to steal metal to sell, Berkeley Electric Co-Op spokesman Micah Ponce said.
