Possessing a dock on the Ashley River is worth its weight in gold, or at least $1,500 a month.

That’s the price for dock space. And some people think they can rent a riverside house with a dock just to have access to the pier.

“I’ve had people call. It was as cheap to rent a home (with a dock with it),” says Kay Maddox, who owns 4623 Apple St. in the Wando Woods neighborhood of North Charleston.

The house, which comes with a dock for personal watercraft on the Ashley River, is for rent for $2,395 a month. Tenants can use the dock for no extra charge. The lease is long term and includes a $2,500 deposit. Looked at another way, the property rent would be about $895 a month not counting the pier.

Yet the 3,000-square-foot residence offers plenty more than simply a way to get to the river. Located off Apple Street in a semi-secluded locale, the Wando Woods house is near the intersection of Dorchester Road and Interstate 526. The property is “very convenient. It’s close to Boeing, I-526, I-26,” she says.

Among features of the home are four bedrooms with another space that can be converted to a fifth bedroom, and three-and-a-half baths. There’s a two-car garage and a second-floor sundeck on the side of the house, which was built about 15 years ago, Maddox says.

Also inside the residence are a tidy kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher; an oversized sunroom; adjacent living room; and a dining room.

An uncommon perk is a pair of master suites, both on the upper floor. One suite is over the garage and includes an extra large bedroom. There’s a separate laundry, and a fireplace is in a master bedroom.

A sizable porch wraps halfway around the house, and a small yard borders the home.

The house is near the end of Apple Street. Traveling west, get on I-26, go to I-526 and head toward West Ashley. Take the Dorchester Road-Paramount Drive exit and travel south on Paramount. Turn right on Holbird Street. Go three blocks, and Apple Street is on the left. Ahead is 4623 Apple St.
