TLC film on letters to Jackie Kennedy

NEW YORK — TLC network is making a movie about some of the 800,000 condolence letters sent to the widow of President John F. Kennedy after his 1963 assassination.

“Letters to Jackie” will air this fall, as the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s killing approaches on Nov. 22.

The film examines the former first lady’s role in helping the nation through its grief as she suffered through her own.

Celebrities will read the letters, including Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Mark Ruffalo, Betty White and Michelle Williams.

J.D. Salinger’s letters to go to NYC museum

Letters written by J.D. Salinger to a spiritual mentor have been donated to a New York City museum. The Morgan Library & Museum, based in Manhattan, announced that it will receive 28 letters by the author of “The Catcher in the Rye.” The letters were written to Swami Nikhilananda, founder of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center, which donated the correspondence.

Salinger, who died in 2010 at 91, was influenced by Eastern religion and philosophy and worked his beliefs into stories.

Materials given to the Morgan also include letters the center wrote to Salinger and exchanges between the center and Salinger’s widow, Colleen O’Neill. The museum already had 24 Salinger letters.

Brad Meltzer writing books for children

NEW YORK — Best-selling suspense novelist Brad Meltzer is working on a children’s series. Dial Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), says that Meltzer has a deal for a picture book series about famous Americans. The first two releases, “I Am Amelia Earhart” and “I Am Abraham Lincoln,” are expected in late 2014.

Meltzer’s novels include “The Fifth Assassin.”

Louvre director expert on Greek antiquities

PARIS — France’s Louvre museum is getting a new director, the man leading the restoration of its most famous Greek sculpture.

Jean-Luc Martinez, a French specialist in Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities who has worked at the Louvre since 2007, was appointed for a three-year term. Martinez, 49, is leading the restoration of the famed headless Winged Victory of Samothrace this year. He takes over in mid-April from Henri Loyrette.
