Jenny Sanford isn’t endorsing anyone, including her ex-husband, in next month’s special congressional election.
In an email to Congressional Quarterly, she was quoted as saying: “I don’t have any thoughts on the race that I am currently interested in sharing with the public and I have no plans to endorse.”
She said her main focus is on her four sons.
Her ex-husband, Mark Sanford, faces Elizabeth Colbert Busch, sister of comic Stephen Colbert, in a special election May 7 to fill the 1st Congressional District seat vacated by now U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.
Political analysts had said Jenny Sanford was a wildcard in the hotly contested race. Several media outlets reported last month that Jenny Sanford and Colbert Busch had met about endorsement possibilities, which triggered statements from the Colbert Busch campaign denying they were pursuing Jenny Sanford’s public support.
Jenny Sanford ran her husband’s successful past campaigns for Congress and the governor. They divorced after Mark’s mysterious disappearance from South Carolina in 2009 and revelations that he was having an extramarital affair.
