A controversial financing plan for the Beach Co.’s high-end Kiawah River Plantation development on the southern end of Johns Island is beginning to move forward.
Charleston County Council on April 25 will hear a presentation on the tax-increment financing district plan that would generate $84 million for improvements to the property. The money would from future tax revenue the development would generate.
There’s a lot of opposition to the plan from Johns Island residents. And a representative from a local environmental group has called the plan a subsidy for a developer.
County leaders have said the upcoming presentation is the first step in long process of considering the plan. County Council ultimately will decide whether the plan moves forward.
