Wando boys pound A.C. Flora to reach state lacrosse championship
MOUNT PLEASANT — A discarded index card underneath the Wando bench revealed the Warriors’ mission statement for Tuesday’s Lower State championship against A.C. Flora: 1, Chew them up. 2. Spit them out. 3. Dominate.
Wando’s bid to become the first boys team in state history to win two state lacrosse championships remains alive.
The Warriors, No. 1 in the state and the No. 1 seed, pounded A.C. Flora, 16-2, to reach Saturday’s state championship. They will play Fort Mill, an 11-10 winner over Greenville, at White Knoll High School. The match will start at 1:30 p.m.
The Warriors (14-1) are the defending state champs and hope to claim their second title since the High School League sanctioned the sport four years ago. They have won seven straight playoff games and are making their third appearance in the title game. The Warriors dropped a 10-8 decision to Greenville in the 2010 championship.
“We lost 18 seniors from last year’s team and have only one starter back,” Wando coach Lance Renes said. “The players have stepped up, formed their chemistry at the beginning of the season. What they have accomplished has been pretty phenomenal. These boys want to win. They play to win. Every day and every practice, they play to win.”
The Warriors have outscored their three playoff foes, 50-12. Tuesday’s game was so lopsided they used a running clock beginning midway through the third quarter.
“We came out ready to play tonight,” Renes said. “We’ve been battling slow starts all year. In the playoffs, our goal has been to come out of the gates. That was our goal tonight. That’s our goal Saturday.”
Tucker Dodson, Carson Horner and Andrew Phelan led a balanced attack with three goals apiece. C.J. Andersen and Wright Bailey both added two.
The Falcons ended with an 11-3 record.
Wando Goals: Dodson 3, Horner 3, Phelan 3, Andersen 2, Bailey 2, Dotterer, Brower, Robinson.
A.C. Flora Goals: Salais 1, Adams 1.
