Piggly Wiggly to close Summerville store; Harris Teeter leases site
Piggly Wiggly is moving out of one of its three Summerville stores. Harris Teeter plans to move in.
The longtime supermarket at 680 Bacons Bridge Road in Summerville will close April 27, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. spokesman Christopher Ibsen said Tuesday.
Harris Teeter spokeswoman Danna Jones said Harris Teeter has signed a lease for the 40,500-square-foot building property, but she did not have any other details, including an opening date for the new store.
Piggly Wiggly’s lease on the 20-year-old store in Summerville Plaza is expiring, and the Charleston-based chain decided not to renew it, Ibsen said.
“The level of sales at that location just didn’t justify working out a lease beyond its original term,” he said.
The company is working with all 48 employees at the store individually to relocate as many as possible, Ibsen said. Some of them are long-term workers for the grocer.
Jones provided no further details about Harris Teeter’s plans, but there is speculation that the Matthews, N.C.-based supermarket chain will raze the existing building and construct a whole new supermarket.
Harris Teeter is building another supermarket on Dorchester Road at Wescott Plantation in North Charleston.
The 53,000-square-foot store will offer Starbucks, a salad bar and many energy-efficient features.
It is expected to open in early 2014, Jones said.
