GREENVILLE — A 55-year-old Greenville man has died after he was struck by a car while trying to save his dog.

Chief Deputy Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis says Darryl Harris had gone out for pizza on Monday night when his black lab bolted from their home.

Ellis says Harris went straight for the dog and was bending down when they were both hit by a car. The dog was killed, and Ellis says Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ellis says Harris’ death has been ruled an accident. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
