Rescue crews have found a body in a pond on Johns Island after a search that began when a man apparently lost his bearing and fell into a pond off Mary Ann Point Road while fishing.
At first, authorities had reported the man had fallen from a boat, but Charleston County Sheriff’s Maj. James Brady issued a statement Tuesday night saying that initial reports were incorrect, that the man was standing on the bank of a pond when he slipped into the water.
There was a boat at the scene, Brady said, but it was not involved in the incident.
The victim was identified as 65-year-old Lovell Linton of Johns Island, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton.
Crews were dispatched to the area, which is near Main and Chisolm roads, about 11:145 a.m., Brady said.
St. Johns firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and paramedics searched the murky, 200-foot wide pond for Linton for several hours before finding his body.
Relatives at the scene said Linton would not get into a boat to fish because he could not swim.
