World No. 1 Serena Williams claimed her third Family Circle Cup title, and second in a row, with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Jelena Jankovic today on Daniel Island.
Jankovic, ranked 18th and the 2007 Family Circle Cup champion, showed guts in fighting off five break points in the fourth game while taking the first set.
But in the first game of the second set, Williams held up her tennis racquet as Jankovic served, the second time Williams felt her opponent served before she was ready.
“How long do I have to wait?” Jankovic asked the chair umpire.
“Until I’m ready,” Williams replied.
From that moment, Williams won the next eight points, the next six games and 12 of the next 14 games to take the championship before 8,752 fans at Billie Jean King Court.
Williams, 31, also won Family Circle Cup titles in 2008 and 2012. She joins Chris Evert (eight titles), Martina Navratilova (four) and Steffi Graf (four) as the only players to win three or more FCC championships.
Under sunny skies, the team of Kritsina Mladenovic and Lucie Safarova won the doubles title with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Andrea Hlavackova and Liezel Huber.
