Charleston County authorities have charged a 19-year-old Ravenel man with killing a man whose body was discovered by kids playing hide-and-seek in the woods Friday, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Saturday.
Harold Lee Jones Jr., of 6011 Branton Road, was arrested about 8:30 p.m. Friday by Charleston County deputies and charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
James Butler, 67, of Ravenel, was found dead by two children in a wooded area behind a vacant house with broken-out windows on Roper Road Extension, deputies said.
The arrest report said Butler was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head and several stab wounds in his back.
Investigators had received tips that pinpointed Jones as a suspect. Deputies found Jones with a silver-plated .32-caliber handgun, and detectives were told that he had made statements that he was going to kill Butler over an earlier argument between the two.
The arrest report said Jones was seen driving Butler’s pickup truck on Thursday. Another witness told detectives they saw Jones leaving the area where Butler’s body was found, driving the pickup.
Deputies added that Butler’s home appeared to have been burglarized, and evidence included a chair positioned by a broken window.
There was also blood on the porch and some outside the truck, according to the statement.
The document said Jones, who appeared to have cuts on both hands, voluntarily confessed to detectives that he had killed Jones.
Jones was arraigned Saturday. He is being held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center without bond.
