MOUNT PLEASANT — UNC Greensboro’s Max Povse tossed a five-hit shutout as the Spartans routed College of Charleston, 12-0, in the first game of a Southern Conference weekend series.
UNC Greensboro (16-14, 4-6 SoCon) pounded out 17 hits, including nine for extra bases, against the Cougars (16-13, 7-5). Povse (2-1) struck out seven and walked just two.
Charleston’s Matt Pegler (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season, going 41/3 innings and allowing a season-high six runs on 13 hits. The only hits for College of Charleston came off the bats of Brandon Murray and Ryan Welke. Murray had three hits, including one double, while Welke had two doubles on the game. Both players were stranded on base.
Trevor Edwards led UNCG with a double and home run, tallying three RBIs and scoring three runs. Eric Kalbfleisch hit a three-run homer for the Spartans, while Ray Crawford had two RBIs and two runs. Cambric Moye went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and TJ Spina recorded two RBIs.
UNCG scored a run in the top of the first with doubles from Christian Wolfe and Edwards. A double from Lloyd Enzor and single from Benigno Marrero kicked off the fourth inning. Crawford hit a two-out single to score both runners, and then Edwards homered to put UNCG up 5-0 after four.
The Cougars never threatened for the rest of the game as UNCG scored one in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh inning to take the 12-0 victory.
The 12 runs and 17 hits were the most allowed by College of Charleston this season.
Game 2 of the series will be today at 6 p.m. CofC’s Nathan Helvey will take the mound against UNCG’s Corey Taylor.
