Negotiating a lengthy stay in a classic home in Charleston’s historic district isn’t necessarily that easy, unless you have a whole lot of bills lying around.

Houses for sale south of Broad Street tend to cost from the high six figures to $5 million or more.

But there is at least one option that would trim the price, say, to $25,000 to $50,000 a year.

That would be to rent a home downtown. A well-to-do tenant can enjoy the ambiance of residing in a house that’s 100 to 200 years old while forking over less cash than as an owner.

Or, a wealthy executive who’s spending a limited amount of time in the Charleston area can lease an antebellum home, thereby enjoying an elegant locale while in town.

One such property that could fit these scenarios is 15 Limehouse St. The single-style home, built in 1860 a few blocks from White Point Gardens, will be available for lease as of Monday. The rate is $3,500 a month.

Belser Thompson Real Estate in Charleston is handling the rental. Bill Thompson, broker-in-charge, describes 15 Limehouse as a “beautiful … house.” It’s a “nice historical home,” he says, “in a quiet south of Broad neighborhood.”

The two-story residence with light blue façade was renovated last year, Thompson says. Spotlight features of the 153-year-old house include formal living and dining rooms and a study upstairs.

The house is plenty large enough for a family or guests, sporting four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. Added interior conveniences that are a bit more modern than the 19th century are a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and a washer and dryer.

Behind the house is a “nice, small garden” and a yard in back, Thompson says. Situated on the west side of Limehouse Street, the property possesses a familiar trait of a single house — double porches boasting wide white columns.

The residence is toward the middle of the block on Limehouse Street. From further up the peninsula, travel south on Rutledge Avenue crossing Broad Street. Proceed a block and turn left on Tradd Street. Take the second right, which is Limehouse Street. Continue for a short distance and on the right is 15 Limehouse St.
