HILTON HEAD ISLAND— The Federal Aviation Administration is keeping three of South Carolina’s smaller airport towers open until early May.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports http://bit.ly/16jSBOd the Hilton Head Island Airport tower will be open through this year’s RBC Heritage golf tournament in April. The golf tournament is April 15-21.
The FAA said last week that Hilton Head’s control tower was among 149 to be closed next month as part of federal budget cuts. The Hilton Head tower is operated by contractor Robinson Aviation and owned by Beaufort County.
The FAA said it will stop funding 24 contract towers April 7 and another 46 on April 21.
The FAA says towers at Donaldson Center Airport in Greenville and Grand Strand Airport in North Myrtle Beach will stay open until May 5.
