The Summerville baseball team must forfeit four games, including one that gave coach Burt Bazzle his 500th career victory, after using an ineligible player.
The school’s administration said it discovered this week an ineligible player was on the Green Wave baseball team for four games beginning with the March 11 victory over Goose Creek, a win that gave Bazzle his milestone.
The Green Wave had to forfeit that game and games against Stratford, Wando and Bishop England.
Summerville on Wednesday beat Colleton County 13-1 in a game that will officially go down as Bazzle’s 500th victory.
The school investigated and confirmed that the player in question had transferred to Summerville from a local school that was not in the S.C. High School League, which is allowed under league rules. But the player participated in a preseason baseball scrimmage at the private school before transferring to Summerville.
At Summerville, the player had dressed out for the game against Goose Creek and was a pinch-hitter for the next three games.
“From our understanding, the player played in a preaseason game and that made him a member of that school’s team,” Summerville principal Kenny Farrell said.
“You can’t play for two teams in one season.”
