Citadel wrestlers Delaney, Khishgnyam claim All-America honors
Citadel wrestlers Odie Delaney and Ugi Khishignyam both claimed All-America honors today, becoming just the second and third wrestlers in school history to do so.
Delaney, a heavyweight, pinned Oregon State’s Chad Hanke, the third seed, tonight to assure a top eight finish in the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Delaney won two earlier matches today to advance in the consolation bracket.
Khishignyam, seeded sixth at 141 pounds, advanced to the semifinals to assure his All-America finish. He lost there tonight by 4-0 to No. 2 seed and undefeated Kendric Maple of Oklahoma.
Khishignyam, a redshirt freshman from Mongolia, earned an earlier 3-2 victory over No. 3 seed Mike Mangrum of Oregon State in the 141-pound quarterfinals. That put the sixth-seeded Khishignyam into the semifinals, the first Citadel wrestler to advance that far in the NCAAs.
Delaney defeated American’s Blake Herrin, 5-2, and Arizona State’s Levi Cooper by fall to stay alive in the consolation bracket.
Dan Thompson is the only other Bulldog to earn All-America honors, in 2006.
