CSU’s Radebaugh: No contact from Furman, and no comment

Furman basketball coach Jeff Jackson resigned today, creating a third vacancy in the Southern Conference and sparking speculation that Charleston Southern’s Barclay Radebaugh might be a fit for the Paladins.

Jackson resigned after seven years with Furman, with an overall record of 85-131 capped by a 7-24 season in 2012-13.

Radebaugh’s name immediately surfaced in Internet reports, including the website hoopdirt.com.

Radebaugh told The Post and Courier on today that he had not been contacted by Furman, and would have no other comment on the job.

Radebaugh was an assistant at Furman from 1990-94, and led CSU to a 19-13 record, a Big South regular-season title and a berth in the NIT this season.

Just two years ago, Jackson took Furman to a 22-win season and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com tournament, the Paladins’ first postseason bid since 1991.

But the injury-plague Paladins struggled to a 3-15 record in the SoCon this season, and were 22-40 the last two years overall.

“We respect Coach Jackson’s decision to resign and pursue other career opportunities, whether in coaching or other areas,” Furman athletic director Gary Clark said in a statement. “We appreciate the manner in which he has represented Furman University and Furman athletics. He has recruited quality young men who have performed in the classroom and represented Furman with class on the basketball court. We wish Coach Jackson all the best in his future endeavors.”

Two other SoCon schools are seeking coaches. Georgia Southern fired Charlton Young, and Chattanooga parted ways with coach John Shulman. Shulman had one year left on his contract, and the school refused to offer him an extension.
