Labor union plans protest against sequestration near VA hospital
The AFL-CIO of South Carolina is organizing a protest in front of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon to protest federal sequestration cuts and how those cuts may affect veterans in South Carolina.
A spokeswoman for the VA told The Post and Courier before the sequestration deadline on March 1 that the VA will not be affected by the cuts.
A press release for the protest said other veterans programs run by the federal Dept. of Labor may be subject to the across-the-board cutbacks.
“These programs that help our returning veterans find new employment and make the transition back to civilian life are vital to our community,” said Erin McKee, vice president of South Carolina’s AFL-CIO, in a statement.
The one-hour demonstration will start at 5:15 p.m. in front of the VA Medical Center, 109 Bee St.
