Deputies nab man accused of leading Hanahan police on high-speed chase

A man accused of leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit earlier this month from Hanahan to downtown Charleston was arrested Monday night, the police said this morning.

Barry Jerod Stanley, 29, was arrested by Charleston County deputies on Wadmalaw Island, according to Lt. Michael Fowler of the Hanahan Police Department. He faces charges of criminal domestic violence, trafficking in cocaine base, aggravated assault, failure to stop for blue lights and siren and two counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.

He was jailed at the Hill Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner in lieu of a $72,130 bail.

Stanley faces charges stemming from an incident that started before 5 p.m. March 11 when officers were told that a man was beating up his girlfriend on Old Point Road, according to the incident report. The woman told the police that her boyfriend had fled in a dark blue Ford Crown Victoria and was carrying drugs and possibly a gun.

The Ford’s driver forced an officer off the road and tossed cocaine out a window in Hanahan, hit a minivan on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston and finally jumped out of his car on Maple Street in Charleston, where he took off running, Fowler said.

He managed to elude authorities that day.

Stanley’s previous convictions include possession and distribution of crack cocaine and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

The alleged victim in the domestic violence incident, 27-year-old Evette Monique Nelson, already had been arrested after the police said she changed her story by saying someone else assaulted her and led the police on the chase. But Nelson’s new story was deemed phony, the police said, and she now faces charges of obstruction of justice and unlawful conduct toward a child.
