North Charleston man charged after getting shot by officer has been jailed again

The 18-year-old charged after a North Charleston police officer shot him last year was jailed again Monday afternoon, according to an incident report.

Carlton Lamont Pringle was arrested outside his Olivia Drive home on a charge of simple possession of marijuana.

The North Charleston Police Department said Pringle was the young man who pointed a handgun at an officer in March. The officer fired in self-defense, the police said, and hit Pringle five times.

Around 6 p.m. Monday, a different officer reported that Pringle pushed a 16-year-old girl outside his home. Officer Brett Allen asked Pringle if he had anything illegal on him, and he said, “Yes,” according to an incident report.

Allen reported that Pringle smelled of marijuana. A search revealed a bag of about 5 grams, or 0.18 ounces, of the drug, the report stated.

Pringle was out on bail in connection with the incident last spring in which he suffered a bullet wound in the back, another in the buttocks and three more in the pelvic area.

Officers had been responding to reports of gunfire when they saw Pringle at Gaynor Street and Hock Avenue. He matched the shooting suspect’s description, they said.

A surveillance video shows him running, then turning slightly and extending an arm toward the officer chasing him. The officer fires.

The police said they found a 9 mm Hi-Point pistol at Pringle’s side, though family members questioned that account and said Pringle was a normally behaved choir boy at his church.

But a grand jury indicted him on charges of unlawfully carrying a handgun, unlawfully carrying a handgun by a person under 18, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm.

He remained in jail this afternoon.
