One day until 1st District primaries

The Lowcountry’s skies may cloud up Tuesday, but Lowcountry voters will clear up who remains in the running for the vacant 1st Congressional District seat.

Sixteen Republicans and two Democrats are running, and the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the district, which includes parts of Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester counties.

The seat became vacant when U.S. Rep. Tim Scott was appointed to fill former Sen. Jim DeMint’s seat.

The resulting field is believed to be a record for a recent South Carolina congressional race.

The Republicans include: Keith Blandford, Curtis Bostic, Ric Bryant, Larry Grooms, Jonathan Hoffman, Jeff King, John Kuhn, Tim Larkin, Chip Limehouse, Peter McCoy, Elizabeth Moffly, Ray Nash, Andy Patrick, Shawn Pinkston, Mark Sanford and Teddy Turner.

The Democrats include Elizabeth Colbert Busch and Ben Frasier. It’s the only race on the ballot, and many expect a light turnout. It’s also the first major election in South Carolina since its new Voter ID law took effect.

Voters may present any one of five state-issued picture IDs, such as a driver’s license, U.S. passport or new voter-registration card with a photo. Those who do not have an ID still may cast ballots if they sign a paper saying they had a reasonable impediment to obtaining one.
