COLUMBIA — Two more Richland County jail guards have been recommended for termination in last month’s beating of an inmate.

County spokeswoman Stephany Snowden says the officers were placed on administrative leave without pay Friday and have been recommended for dismissal. Snowden says the guards are accused of knowing about the attack and failing to report it.

Six officers have been suspended in the investigation.

Thirty-seven-year-old Robin Smith was arrested earlier this month and charged with aggravated assault and battery. County officials also fired Smith, who had worked at the jail for two years.

A 51-year-old homeless man was arrested Feb. 7 for trespassing at the University of South Carolina and was in the jail when he was attacked. He was not hospitalized until four days after the attack.
