St. Johns crew plucks stranded jet skier from pluff mud
St. Johns firefighters and Charleston County rescue squad members rescued a jet skier Sunday who got stranded in pluff mud at Wadmalaw Sound.
Emergency crews responded at about 5:00 p.m. after getting a call that a man on a jet ski was stuck in mud. Firefighters talked with the man, who had a cell phone, and he told them he was not injured, Battalion Chief James T. Ghi said.
Upon arrival, firefighters determined the victim could not be reached by boat. Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad members provided a rescue mat that allowed firefighters to reach the stranded man and return him to dry land, Ghi said.
The rescue mat consists of a waterproof material that can be used for various types of rescue situations on water, ice and over soft mud, Ghi said.
