S.C. jobless rate rose to 8.7% in January

South Carolina’s unemployment rate rose to 8.7 percent in January.

The state Department of Employment and Workforce reported Monday that the jobless rate increased from an upwardly adjusted 8.6 percent in December. The original rate reported for December stood at 8.4 percent.

Nationally, the unemployment rate rose slightly from 7.8 percent in December to 7.9 percent in January.

In South Carolina, the number of employed persons increased to 1,987,765, and unemployed persons numbered 188,496 in January. Since January 2012, employment has increased 26,840.

The unemployment rate for the Charleston area climbed to 7.3 percent from 7.1 percent in December.
