Inauguration tops in inaugural Charleston Trials
HOLLYWOOD — The inaugural running of the Charleston Trials brought out a crowd of about 3,000 spectators who celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at Stono Ferry and watched four quality races on Sunday.
The event served as a tuneup for next weekend’s Aiken event and the Carolina Cup, which will be held in Camden at the end of the month.
Inauguration and jockey Mark Watts won the final race of the day, the Tatterstall Whip. The race covered one mile and seven furlongs over modified national fences, and the winning time was 3 minutes, 57 seconds.
Brilliant Match won the Hampton Cup with a time of 1:46 over the one-mile on the turf course. Danielle Hodson was the winning jockey.
Blue Grass Summer and jockey Bernard Dalton won the Washington Cup, which covered one mile and three furlongs on the turf. The winning time was 2:25.
Bernard Dalton rode Tuxedo Park to a victory in the Newmarket Cup.
The race covered one mile and seven furlongs over modified national fences.
Tuxedo Park crossed the finish line in 3:36.
