Gamecocks split with Missouri
COLUMBIA, MO. — Missouri raced out to an early three-run lead in Game 2 of a Sunday doubleheader against South Carolina and held on, 4-0, to snap the fifth-ranked Gamecocks’ 10-game winning streak in Southeastern Conference action.
Despite the loss, USC (17-3, 2-1) won the first conference series of the year after winning the first game of the day, 2-0. Missouri dropped to 6-9, 1-2).
“It was a tough day to play for both teams,” said South Carolina coach Chad Holbrook. “Nolan (Belcher) has been incredible and pitched well (winning Game 1).
“We stung the ball pretty good (in Game 2). I thought our at-bats were OK. We just couldn’t generate momentum. It’s a weekend series and we won it, so we will take the series and head home, get some rest and get ready for a big week ahead.”
The Gamecocks next play Tuesday at 7 p.m. against The Citadel at Riley Park.
In Game 1, Belcher hurled eight scoreless innings and combined with senior left-hander Tyler Webb for a five-hit shutout.
Belcher (4-1) limited the Tigers to just five hits and struck out six batters while walking none.
Belcher has pitched 32 consecutive innings without allowing a walk.
