Charleston Battery wins scrimmage
Cary, N.C. — The Charleston Battery defeated the Carolina RailHawks, 2-1, in a preseason scrimmage Tuesday.
The Battery, who next faces College of Charleston next Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Patriots Point, jumped out to a two-goal lead before halftime thanks to goals from Quinton Griffith and Micheal Azira.
Charleston opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a superbly taken goal by Griffith. Jose Cuevas and Jarad van Schaik combined on the right side and slipped a pass through to Griffith who drilled a shot past the RailHawks goalie from an acute angle.
The Battery doubled its lead at the 30-minute mark after Azira ran onto an errant clearance. Azira hit a first-time shot from twenty yards out that whistled just inside the far post.
The RailHawks pulled a goal back on the 70 minute mark after a spell of pressure but were unable to find an equalizer in the final twenty minutes.
The Charleston Battery continues its pre-season schedule next Tuesday afternoon with a 2:30 PM match versus the College of Charleston at Patriots Point.
