938 W. Oceanview Road — Waterside sights mark main digs, suite on removed James Island property

Inlaid in the second level entry foyer of one home off Harbor View Road is a prominent wooden engraving of a compass, fitted with precise coordinates.
An absorbing sight from above, the directional dial at 938 W. Oceanview Road sports four arrows with the southern pointer aimed toward water.
Just as the compass divines water, so does the southern exposed residence on James Island. It is loaded with wide windows and decks peppered with rocking chairs, enabling residents to zero in on adjacent Clark Sound, waterfront homes, front marshland called “The Spit” and the Morris Island lighthouse in the distance.
The 4,038-square-foot house, built in 2007, is on the market for $1,159,000.
“It’s fantastic,” says Jan Miller, broker-in-charge of Wilkinson & Associates ERA Charleston.
The property, to be specific, can be considered two houses. The 2,800-square-foot main building facing the sound is three stories including a ground level garage, second floor with master suite including tile bathroom floors and deluxe shower and an inverse top level with kitchen and living room.
Extra wide stairs adjoin the middle and top floors, and a light fixture shaped like a pineapple hangs in the stairwell. An elevator connects all three floors.
“The main house is an executive home, four bedrooms (and) four baths,” Miller says in her listing.
Meanwhile off the back of the main home is a second floor breezeway that connects to a 1,200-square-foot mother-in-law suite. The one story residence, which provides views of the roomy backyard and a tidal creek dubbed The Point, shows off two bedrooms, one bath, sizable living space, an upscale kitchen and a rear sunroom.
“This is a unique property,” Miller says. “Sometimes it’s going to take a unique buyer.”
Interested parties might include a family with a relative or “older child going to college” who could live in the back suite. A buyer may also want to rent out either of the units, which have generated solid income over time, she says.
“Because we weren’t going to be there all the time, that house was built with privacy in mind,” says Cathy Schlumbrecht, the owner who grew up on James Island and now has her main residence in Santa Cruz, Calif.
“We wanted more of a contemporary style, to have a maintenance-free house,” she says.
The many windows, a few small and square and a number with transoms above, were designed to be higher than usual so it’s harder to see neighbors or for them to peek over. Hurricane windows are also installed.
In addition to the panoramic views, spotlight perks of the property are numerous. The main house sports a large kitchen with elongated granite countertop; pantry; stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, gas cooktop, dishwasher and microwave; specially designed cabinets that resemble the appliances’ grayish metal appearance; a main sink; and a second basin on another counter to handle seafood and the like.
“Everything is top of the line,” Miller says.
Next to the kitchen is an ample living room-dining area that leads to a front balcony and looks out on the water. A bedroom and bath also open to the deck. According to Miller, the 938 W. Oceanview property is a “great entertaining house.”
The residence is a short distance across the street from Clark Sound, and the owner obtained permits to install a dock if a buyer so chose, Miller says. Oceanview Road leading up to the house is dirt, but a neighborhood group maintains it routinely.
“I just think it’s private,” Miller says.
The house is near the tip of West Oceanview Road. Heading south, take the James Island connector to the Harbor View Road exit. Turn right and continue over James Island Creek to Fort Johnson Road. Veer right on Fort Johnson and proceed just past James Island Charter High School. Make a left on Oceanview Road. Go about a mile and turn left on West Oceanview Road. Follow the road from pavement to dirt. About a quarter-mile ahead on the left is 938 W. Oceanview Road.
