Charleston Southern and College of Charleston’s women’s tennis teams earned home victories Monday.
Marketa Placha’s victory clinched the match as Charleston Southern beat Gardner-Webb, 6-1, to win its fourth straight match in women’s tennis.
The Buccaneers (5-4, 3-0 Big South) swept all three doubles matches and took five of the six singles matches against Gardner-Webb (2-6, 0-2).
Placha defeated Erica White 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to clinch the match for the Buccaneers, who also got singles wins from Yvonne Hubler, Alexandra Walters, Alia Nour and Susita Das (win by forfeit).
In Mount Pleasant, the Cougars beat East Tennessee State, 4-1, at Patriots Point.
College of Charleston (7-5) clinched the victory when Samantha Maddox rallied to beat Jessica Brumit 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Irene Viana, Katherine Schofield and Christin Newman recorded singles victories for the Cougars, who host Wichita State at 1 p.m. on March 18.
College of Charleston recorded a pair of second-place finishes in sailing regattas this past weekend. The Cougars entered competition with their highest national rankings of the season with sole possession of No. 1 in the latest college coed rankings.
In the John Jackson Memorial Race hosted by Georgetown, the Cougars finished second with a 7-3 record behind Stanford (9-1). In the Port of LA Harbor Cup, the Cougars also finished in second, behind host California Maritime Academy.
The Cougars also competed in the Navy Spring Women’s Intersectional Regatta, where the team finished in seventh out of 20 schools, and the St. Mary’s Team Race, where the Cougars finished sixth.
This weekend, the Cougars will compete in three regattas with the Truxton Umsted in Annapolis, Md., the St. Mary’s Women’s Intersectional in St. Mary’s City, Md., and the North Points No. 4 in Atlanta.
The Charleston Battery heads to Cary, N.C., on Thursday for a 3 p.m. preseason match against the Carolina RailHawks. The match was originally scheduled for Friday.
The next home preseason match for the Battery is March 19 against College of Charleston at 2:30 p.m.
Charleston opens the regular season at Richmond on April 13.
