Region receives state base protection money

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce today will receive $50,000 from the state to help in its effort to protect local military installations against congressional cuts or re-alignment.

The S.C. Military Base Task Force is distributing $200,000 in base-preservation funding

to Charleston, Beaufort, Columbia and Sumter - homes of the major installations in the state.

The money will be turned over at 11:30 a.m. at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, 4500 Leeds Ave., North Charleston.

State and local officials are preparing for the across-the-board federal spending reductions known as sequestration, as well as any potential base realignment or closure efforts in the future.

The state is home to eight military installations, including Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base, Joint Base Charleston, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island.

For 2011, the state’s military installations, the S.C. National Guard and in-state defense contractors generated $15.7 billion in economic activity in the state, a study by the S.C. Department of Commerce found.

The state’s military sector supported more than 138,000 jobs in 2011, the study found.
